Several months ago, I bought a Best of The Who CD (I actually bought it for a song to put on a mix for Presbytera Elizabeth. My requirements were it had to have Who Are You for her CD and Boris the Spider for me). Now, The Who is one band that I’ve not spent a lot of time with, excepting a brief Tommy stage.
So, grooving to the Greatest Hits has offered several thoughts. Firstly, Eddie was surprised Squeezebox was by The Who. I realized I was not surprised and that for me, Roger Daltry has a very distinctive voice and I can recognize it. My big revelation was that the song I thought was called Teenage Wasteland is actually Baba O’Riley Who knew? (Other than The Who, obviously).
I also read an interview recently with Pete Townshend. I found this interesting.
This summer, National Review magazine called “Won’t Get Fooled Again” the greatest conservative rock song of all time. Townshend says that’s “on the money.” The self-described “working musician” who sees his job as “helping the audience to forget themselves,” says he never really bought into “all that hippie (expletive) I so despise.”
And, Townshend says, “when people say ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’ is not about rebellion, it’s the exact opposite of that, I say they’re right.”
I guess it goes to show that you see what you want to see in music lyrics.
Although The Who are playing in Seattle tonight, unlike Horton, I won’t be there. I was tempted, but decided it was a work night, and you know, it’s only half of The Who by now. As I also got an offer to buy tickets at 20/each and there are still tickets available, it appears they may not be the draw they once were. Anyway, if you are going – enjoy. Tell me your "Who Stories" I'd love to hear them.
On a side note, the above Bizarro has been my absolute favorite since the day I found it in the paper 10 years ago. I still giggle each and every time I see it.
