This year in Church School, I’ve been blessed to teach about the Liturgy from the wonderful book. Let us Attend by Father Lawrence Farley – it has been fascinating to really delve into the parts of the Liturgy, the development of it, and to discuss it with the kids.

To dovetail with this, I was delighted to get a copy* of the fabulous Jane G. Meyer’s new book, The Woman and the Wheat – it is a beautifully illustrated picture book about a woman who grows wheat, makes it into flour, and then makes the prosphora for church. The prose subtly echoes the Litanies of the Liturgy as well as the Praises. I am planning on reading it aloud to my church school kids and will recommend it for the other classes. Repeated hearings of this lovely book will help children to connect the world that we live in with the beauty of the Liturgy and what we bring to worship God.

Fabulous job, Jane! Thank you for writing the book. And, I encourage those who have children to buy for this Christmas season to pick up a copy.

*In the interest of full disclosure a free copy sent to me by the publisher (photo from the SVS site)

I think that is awesome that you teach classes at church! I shouldn't admit this, but I wouldn't want to teach Sunday school because then it would mean I have to miss out on adult Sunday school. We are studying the Beatitudes right now and will change gears in the new year. I love studying the Bible, but I am a geek that way :)!

Nice! I need to read Fr. L's book sometime; he made me a catachumen! When ever he comes to Ottawa, I am always so glad.

Thanks for this post!!

I look forward to that, Michelle! Sounds like a wonderful book, and from the cover illustration, it appears that the artwork is beautiful, as well.

Suzanna - I think they'd love it.
Victoria - I love Father's book, please thank him for me.
Ali - we don't have adult education during Church School (but we do have Matins) - I learn so much from being a teacher. And, I have the most amazing and wonderful co-teacher, for whom I am greatly thankful.
Janice - I'll bring it to show you.
Elizabeth - I didn't know that. I recommend the book highly (both books actually)
Janelle - the art is really lovely.
