A Woman’s Daybook for Wednesday, October 14
Outside my window...We are having our first rain and wind of the season. We have not been nearly as hard hit as my family in Northern California, they were without power and with downed trees everywhere. Thankfully they all seem to be ok.
I am thinking...About St. Thais and the beautiful Massenet opera about her. I’d never heard it before, then saw it performed on October 4th. Imagine my surprise to discover that her Feast Day was the following Thursday (October 8th).
I am thankful for...the Xman enjoying the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. At the bookstore the other day, the display of the new 4th one reminded him that he enjoyed the first. We now own 2 & 3, with a promise to purchase the new one when he is ready
From the learning rooms...Conference week – the Xman seems to be very social and not always paying attention. Whistles. I’m sure I have no idea where he gets that.
From the kitchen...I’ve been enjoying the shift in foods from our summer bounty to the hearty squash and potato dishes. Yum.
I am wearing...a plaid wool skirt I bought for $1 at a yard sale this summer. I have a black tunic, black tights and some new Mary Jane shoes.
I am creating...The fabulous Janelle is hosting an ATC swap, and I have to assemble mine tonight. I have all the parts ready to go.
I am going...to my first Russian class tomorrow – it’s been about 14 years (I was pregnant with the Xman) since I took First Year Russian, I definitely need to start at the beginning (oooh, while I was typing this, I got pre-class homework. Eeek!)
I am reading...Before Green Gables by Budge Wilson. My mom is the true “Anne with an e” aficionado, but I have read them all (as an adult) and am finding this a delight
I am hoping...would you believe the answer is still for the Oldest to get a job????
I am hearing...the aforementioned Opera
Around the house...I need to find some cool storage for squash, tomatoes, etc since a mouse moved into my vegetable storage box in the garage last year.
One of my favorite things...fresh carrots
A few plans for the rest of the week…Scrapbooking on Saturday with friends, and then seeing a local production of As You Like It with my Dh.
Here is picture for thought I am sharing…for reasons beyond my understanding, a local affiliate has a pet wallaby - I know Tracey and Ian are thinking that Americans are nuts right now - and he brought it into our office.

I just heard about Diary of a Whimpy Kid for the first time yesterday on NPR - now it's everywhere! I'll have to see if my almost 14 yr old will like them.

Ohhh, Russian. Its been more than 20 years for me and has been completely lost.

Thank you for the link to St. Thais...

My middle name is AnnE and I found out later, after I discovered Anne of Green Gables for myself in Grade 5, that my Mom esp. had my middle name as Anne for this book. Tres Cool. I now also think of my middle name as being for St. Anna who is also called St. Anne.

yea for reading! Have not hear of these, will have to look...

I have not heard of those books.

It's wearing a diaper! Sorry, that's all I can sensibly think at the moment.

Mimi, that is so cool that you are taking a Russian class! I would LOVE to be able to read Dostoevksy, Chekhov, and Tolstoy in the original. It would also be so cool to attend a Liturgy in Russian and be able to understand what was being said.

I studied French and Latin for many years in high school and college. I graduated twenty years ago from college and don't remember much of either--though I did try to pick up my Latin Wheelock grammar book a while ago. (But alas, I didn't have the discipline to continue with it.) I did have the privilege of reading the Latin and French version of the gospel at Agape Vespers this past year, which was pretty cool. My friends sort of volunteered me for it.

Ali, don't kid yourself -- Russian is a *tough* language. I'm good with languages -- speak German fluently, and French with moderate fluency -- but after 7 years of Russian, I still can't understand much that is spoken, and read at a snail's pace. BUT, Mimi, this past year, when in contact with Russians whose English was limited, I was able to communicate with them! So don't let my remarks dissuade you -- it was WELL worth it!

After reading the inspiring story of St. Thais, the explanation of the opera was distinctly disappointing. Sigh. Thanks for the link to her life, though -- as often as I've heard the "Meditation from Thais," I had no idea that the opera was based (however loosely) on the life of a saint.

I love mary-janes, but can not seem to find a comfortable pair. My feet are getting more picky the older I get. Your outfit sounds lovely. Me, I'm still in my stretchy pants =)

Okay, that wallaby is so cute, but that still seems really mean to me! Hey, I'm scrapbooking with friends on Saturday, too! ;-) I better get my act together soon. I hope you enjoy your Russian class more than I'm enjoying my CTE classes...ugh! Oh, yeah, I'm taking 48 kids to see AYLI next Thursday! See you in a couple days.

I'll chime in on the love of Mary Janes.

You must take a trip to Prince Edward Island and see all the Anne stuff there. We did this a few years ago - our #3 was in college and we took her just before she began her sophomore year. The house is SO CUTE!

Downside: the toll for the bridge to get on the island was huge. And we learned that residents of the island don't get a break. They must make limited trips off to do "serious" shopping. The island is very large and has lots of shops, but most sell touristy things like jars of Anne of Green Gables jams, etc. you can't live off that.

On the plus side: The bridge is one of the most beautiful and impressive I've ever seen.

Little Brother is devouring Wimpy Kid #4 (library book) and loving every minute! There's nothing better than seeing that your kids love to read.

Deb - I think the target audience is 7-12, so 14 may be a bit too old for them. I'd only vaguely heard of them before this week, but he's blazed through the last three. Now, I need recommendations of similar books.

Elizabeth - that's very cool that your middle name is AnnE, and why.

Margaret - I know. Rolls eyes. But, I'm sure that's better than the alternative.

Ali - I only wish someday I'm able to read the Agape Gospel in another language, although there are several native Russian speakers in my parish, so it would never be Russian. I took French in High School, and Irish Gaelic in college as well. I'm not very good at pronunciation or constructing a sentence. Sigh.

Meg - you are my Russian learning hero, so I have hope. And, what a rush to be able to communicate with Russophones. Good job.

MPN - I wear comfy pants pretty much exclusively at home. I have started to buy good shoe in the past few years, and my feet are much happier (but my pocketbook much lighter, alas)

Chrystabel - save me a spot if you get there before me, and you'll have to let me know how 48 students like it.

Anam Cara - oooooh, PEI! What an awesome trip. I do get that the commercilization is probably a bit (ok a LOT) much.

Michelle - thanks

Barb - I agree. And, he's my reluctant reader. Any other suggestions along the same lines? I'm desperate.

Okay, I'll bite. Who has the job of diapering the wallaby?

I remember telling the kids at school that we rode kangaroos like horses and kept them as common pets like dogs and cats. They bought it hook, line and sinker.
Having seen how destructive a wallaby can be, I don't know why or how you'd want it as a pet!!

As for Anne... I've never read it! Maybe I should put that one on my 2010 list...

My grandyboys are enjoying The Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I just bought Isaiah two of them on Grandparents Day at his school book fair! They look adorable! His mom is getting the newest one since she works at Borders.
I love squash recipes and have a yummy one I acquired basically from the Kitchen Madonna.
Your outfit sounds delightful!
First day of rain! Wow..we've had many now, but today is glorious looking..all the colors, etc.! :)

Thank you!

Father, bless, not me, and that's all I need to know about that ;)

Suzanne - I'm so glad they are enjoying them. I should read them (I suspect they'd not take me very long)
