I keep writing blog posts in my head, but not getting them posted. So, I yanked this Book Meme from the newly houseblessed Deb,

1. What book have you read in the last six months that has really stayed with you? Why? I read A Thousand Splendid Suns in November, and I really thought it was, if possible, stronger than The Kite Runner. I really liked what it had to say about friendship, women surviving in societies where they aren’t valued, the US interactions with Afghanistan, and keeping normalcy during uncertain times. It is my Book Club book for this month, and I look forward to our discussions.

2. What is one of your favorite childhood books? I was not only a reader as a child, but a voracious re-reader. I’d have to say, like most girls of my generation, the answer would be the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder

3. Do you have a favorite book of the Bible? Do tell. I love the Psalms , because I find they echo our human emotions - whatever I am feeling will find an expression the Psalms. I also love that we sing so many of them in Orthodox worship. Another favorite is Judith , and for the New Testament, I’d say the Gospel of Luke

4. What is one book you could read again and again? I tend to be a re-reader by nature, but I’ll say, Animal Dreams by Barbara Kingsolver. In fact, I should put that in my (towering) to read pile

5. Is there a book you would suggest for Lenten reading? What is it and why? Like Deb, I think the default is Great Lent by Father Alexander Schmemann. It is a wonderful history of Lent and features commemorations of the entire season. Each year, I learn something new.

For the last two Lents, I have also had the pleasure of reading Kh. Frederica’s First Fruits of Prayer: A Forty-Day Journey Through The Lenten Prayer of St.Andrew which has an excellent translation of the Canon of St. Andrew along with insights and questions (some I liked better than others). I will probably read it again this year.

And because we all love bonus questions, if you were going to publish a book what would it be? Who would you want to write the jacket cover blurb expounding on your talent? Hum. If I were to wake up with a literary ability, I’d want to get a huge advance to trace Eleanor of Aquitaine’s travels and write about her history. Not that it hasn’t been done a bazillion times, but it’s my question, my book. I’d want all my blogging buddies to say, “I hosted Mimi on her book tour, and we stayed up all night chatting and drinking tea. Much recommended”

Mimi, I didn't think it possible to find another new book meme so soon...but I'm glad you did :-) I enjoyed reading your answers.

What a fun meme. Couldn't agree more with the answers about Lenten books. There's a new convert in our church who's all giddy about her first Lent, and I'm going to suggest both Fr. Schmemann's and Frederica's books for her.

And now you've got me all intrigued about Eleanor of Aquitaine. Looks like I'm off to Wikipedia. Thanks, Mimi. :-)

Loved reading your answers! I need to find A Thousand Splendid Suns, you made it sound more interesting than I thought it was.

I've always loved the poetry of Psalms, the imagery and the emotion. Isaiah also has some gorgeous imagery and language.

My Mom just read A Thousand Splendid Suns and was really taken with it. She said she wasn't sure about it when she picked it up, but decided to give it a try. Once she started reading, she had a hard time putting it down.

I love the little house series (except for the one published by Laura's estate's executor after her death), especially Farmer Boy and the Long Winter. My wife and I have read the whole series aloud to each other, and I've read Farmer boy to my 5 year old.

I love the book of Psalms too! In fact, I bought a book of Psalms this very day! I thought it was small enough to carry around with me in my handbag and then i can read it while waiting for the kids to come out of school etc :-)

I've been reading The Kite Runner, and really like it. I saw A Thousand Splendid Suns in the store, and plan to buy it soon.

The Little House series was a favorite of mine when I was little. Sadly, my daughter never got interested.

Have a great weekend! Thank you for visiting my blog. :)

i enjoyed your post! thanks... lots of good books listed here...

i am re-reading an Elizabeth Goudge; her books on one level are a bit on the romantasied side of things, at least to many of todays readers, but she has a depth and a great comfort too... have you read her? i recommend _the scent of water_

the Psalms are so wonderful...

always love hearing about what you are reading!

Fun meme. I love Laura Ingalls Wilder. I can't tell you how many times I re-read the Little House books! I have all of her other writings as well. I came over from Kellan's blog, by the way!

Oooo,Oooo, have "Animal Dreams" next in my pile to read. Can't wait. And I have both the Lenten books you refer to, and am hoping to stick with it this year. I have done (prayed) the Canon of St. Andrew for the last two years, and it is the most soul building spiritual exercise I have ever partaken in. I am so looking forward to it this year, and hope the book will make it even more profound.

Blessings!

I tried so hard to like the Little House books, because they were my mom's favorite... I guess I just don't have enough "prairie" in me.

I don't think I've ever though about my favorite book of the Bible! I have plenty of verses that I like, but I don't know what my answer would be for favorite book... probably Genesis, because that's where all the Sunday School topics are taken from!! Reminds me of being a kid :)

1. I read both of Hosseini's books, and then followed it up with _Three Cups of Tea_ by Greg Mortenson (the story of his amazing journey, building schools in the far corners of Pakistan). As a followup to _A Thousand Splendid Sons_, I would highly recommend _Snow Flower and the Secret Fan_, a story of women and friendship in 19th century China (again, where women are much less valued than men).

2. Narnia. Hands down.

3. Psalms, yep.

4. Harry Potter. And most other worthwhile books. Lonesome Dove. Most Newbery books. I could go on...

5. Probably _Great Lent_ again, and there's a couple of Kh. Frederica's that I haven't read.

A different bonus: My SIL has several thousand books in her possession; she makes me look positively illiterate. Lately, she's been reviewing for "Library Thing". Check it out: http://alaskabookworm.blogspot.com/

Janelle Yes, Isaiah has beautiful imagery as well. Although, I have to admit, I’d never choose that book since I can’t spell it off the top of my head.

Matt I’ve seen those odd adaptations and new books written (read about Ma’s childhood! Read an episode from the book in another book) but not read them. They look cheap, and like you say, a good reminder of being sure who gets your literary rights after you die.

Deb What a lovely thing to have, a book of the Psalms to carry around! Enjoy!

Elizabeth Ooooh, I’ve never heard of Elizabeth Gedge. Clearly, I need to!

kkt That’s the way I felt about Anne of Green Gables – my mother loved them and I could never get into them. About two or three years ago, I picked them up, and you know what? Mom was right. They are lovely

Liz Yes, I’ve read both “Three Cups of Tea” and “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” both of them were really good. The Narnia series, like Anne of Green Gables, I didn’t read until I was an adult (except the “Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe” ) but really enjoyed. And, I can’t imagine anyone making you look illiterate!

Anastasia Waves! Thanks.

Grace I agree, both of them are good suggestions for someone's first Lent. Although, I'd never use the word Giddy...

And, Renee Blessings to you as you enter Lent. I like reading both of those books a chapter a morning during Lent.

I've somehow missed Animal Dreams, but I have LOVED Barbara Kingsolvers other work, so maybe I'll have to pick that one up next. Thanks for the tip.

Wish I could be at your book club to discuss Splendid Suns... POWERFUL book that had a huge impact on me, but alas I've no one here to talk about it with!

I just finished Kite Runner, and really want to read Splendid Suns. So it's pretty good, huh? I loved Kite Runner, although I'm not sure it is sitting well with me. I keep thinking about it.

I love Psalms too. :-)

1. I named my sister after Laura from the "Little House" series.

2. Thanks for being one of many to inspire me to order "Great Lent" for this Lent.

I loved this meme. I might try it out...
