A rare thing happened yesterday, I have seen one of the movies nominated for Best Picture, the lovely, charming, quiet, and raw Juno(and read Alice’s hysterical and spot on post about Jason Bateman in the movie.) I also keep toying with the idea of seeing Atonement, but keep chickening out because it looks heart wrenching, and plus I’ve not read it yet. But, it arrived yesterday from PBS , so I’ve bumped it to next up in the “to read” pile, I may see it in the theaters yet.

On a related Oscar themed side note, like many I was saddened to hear about Heath Ledger’s death. He has long been one of my favorite actors, and a perennial member of “my list”. May his Memory be Eternal.

And, on that note, I also learned yesterday of the death of one of my internet acquaintances. He was quiet and kind, and like Jacob had wrestled greatly with God, and I know that the angelic choir rejoiced greatly when he became Orthodox. Now, I pray that he is singing with them. Godspeed and Memory Eternal, Thomas.

Mimi,

Sorry to hear of your friend's passing. May Christ who gave Thomas a Life that death could not hold fill you and all who mourn his death with peace!

--Juno is a movie I am interested in seeing.

--About a week and a half ago I caught much of, The Brother's Grimm, on TV. I had heard of the film, but not until watching it did I know that Heath Ledger was in it. A fun little movie, although it did not do so well, about the Grimm Brothers and fairy tales.

--May Thomas' Memory be Eternal.

Memory eternal Thomas! So sorry to read.

Memory eternal Heath: I did like his acting.

And yes, Juno is a movie I am hoping to see this weekend.

I know Heath's death was felt all over the world but it seemed to really hit hard here in Perth (Heath's hometown). His funeral will be here so we are getting all set for the paparazzi onslaught. For such a private person his death has been very public.

You're very perceptive to note that "Atonement" is heart-wrenching. It is a hard movie to watch in a couple ways. There are some rather scenes in the beginning that are (IMHO) more graphic than I was expecting. And there's stuff all through that is just rough emotionally.

I'm a big wimp about movies and probably never would've watched it. But I'm glad that I did -- it is unusual that a movie goes beyond stereotypes and beyond all the regular formulas of who's good and who's bad. This movie does all that, and there are some messages there that are just very well communicated.

I thought Juno was pretty good. I have been toying with seeing Atonement, too. I do love a good love story.
