The other day, my Facebook status mentioned that my crocuses were blooming, and after a discussion in which a friend said that she’d seen an azalea blooming, we joked that it would snow soon. We were right, we have a couple of dustings of snow in the past few days, alternating with clear, bright, crisp, freezing cold, sunny days. But even in these days of cold and snow, it isn’t the same bleak, freezing snow of the dark days of winter. It’s the spring snow and spring cold.
Chatting about the coming of spring, and how you can physically feel the change in the air, one of our Matushkas said “Aslan is on the move.” I talked last year about how March comes in like a lion and how my awareness of that has increased these past few years, this year I was struck with this bringing together of March’s beginnings with the beginning of Spring and the way it coincides with Great Lent, in fact the etymology of the word “Lent”* actually means “Spring”. Rebeca has fleshed this idea out better than I ever could, but I have been continually struck by the way that Spring’s tendrils encompass our lives, and how the same thing occurs with Lent – how we have the storms of Lent, the bright and crispness of Lent, and the new growth in our lives each Lent. And, how like flowers are found in the weeds and debris of winter, how God is found in the weeds and debris of my life – and like I need to clean around the flowers and buds, I need to clean out my heart and my life through this joyful time of repentance, fasting, almsgiving and increased prayer. As we pray on the weekdays of Lent:
O Lord and Master of my life!
Take from me the spirit of sloth,
despair, lust of power, and idle talk.
But give rather the spirit of chastity,
humility, patience, and love to Thy servant.
Yea, Lord and King! Grant me to see my own transgressions
and not to judge my brother,
for Thou art blessed unto ages of ages. Amen. – St Ephraim the Syrian.
Pray for me this Lent that I may be ready for Pascha.
*I have this theory that the word lentil is related to the word Lent, but I’ve never known for sure. I have a friend who recently got the OED for her birthday, this reminds me I need to email her and ask if this is true.

She got the OED for her birthday?! Really? I am so jealous.
I loved your thoughts, very beautiful.
Lovely thoughts. You can be sure of my prayers. Always.
yes. new beginnings. lent. May God so grant.
Love to you!
What a beautiful post. I've always loved that part of TLTW&TW where winter leaves Narnia and spring creeps in.
(I'm jealous of the OED present, too!)
My prayers ascending from Down Under.
Please remember me also.
I like the correlation of the coming of Spring and Lent here in the northern hemisphere. I've often wondered how different it would be south of the equator. like Australia, perhaps, or Ethiopia?
I'm not being facetious, either. It just seems like such an appropriate correlation, that if I had to live anywhere else now, Lent and Pascha would be materially changed for me.
At the moment here in Australia it is hot and sticky and not feeling at all like new life. Actually it is coming into Autumn when everything dies and looks a bit sad before the winter grasses come alive. Maybe we should have our Easter in September, then I wouldn't have to keep the chocolate in the fridge to stop it from melting - or maybe I should just eat it faster!
I love 'Aslan is on the move' to describe spring.
Lent is an old English word for 'spring', one of our priests said last night it is derived from the word for 'lengthen', ie, lengthening days. Still it does seem that in the etymological rightness of things there should be a connection with lentils.
I was trying to imagine Pascha in autumn. I suppose it would depend on what kind of autumn and how early it fell. There could be a sense of fruition, completion and richness I think.
I pray God keeps us on the straight path during Lent.
May God grant your prayers, Mimi. Lovely post.

Beautiful! And yes, I've also wondered about lent/lentil connections...
I remember spotting a purple crocus in the snow my first spring at college - so lovely.
I have only known Lent in Autumn, so I am not sure how it must feel in Spring.
I find the change of seasons, to shorter days and longer nights, somewhat thrilling. While we do not have the obvious themes of "new life", I do feel a change.
Lovely Mimi!
You always have such nice reflections.
'clean out my heart', what an apt expression, perfect for Lent! My prayers for the spring cleaning of the soul!

No connection between the two. Interestingly enough, our word "lens" comes from the word "lentil" because the a lens is shaped like the side view of a lentil. So if you want to make a connection, it has to between the legume and sight not legume and Lent.
Lent
short for Lenten, from O.E. lencten "spring," the season, from W.Gmc. *langa-tinaz (cf. O.S. lentin, M.Du. lenten, O.H.G. lengizin manoth), from *lanngaz (root of O.E. lang "long") + *tina-, a root meaning "day" (cf. Goth. sin-teins "daily"), cognate with O.C.S. dini, Lith. diena, L. dies "day." the compound probably refers to the increasing daylight. Church sense of "period between Ash Wednesday and Easter" is peculiar to Eng.
lentil
c.1250, from O.Fr. lentille, from V.L. *lenticula, dim. of L. lens (gen. lentis) "lentil," cognate with Gk. lathyros, O.C.S. lesta.
That had to have been the most awesome birthday present ever!
No blooms in my yard yet. I thoroughly expected another snowfall by now.
How is your family taking Lent this year? It makes it easier when everyone is on the same page...but life isn't like that all the time!
She did get the OED, isn't that awesome? I think everyone is jealous.
I'm so bummed to hear that they aren't related, Anam Cara (and my friend reported the same thing). But, lentil is related to lens, and they sure do look like little lenses.
Tracey and Ian - thank you for your perspectives as people who celebrate Lent during the Autumn - I never really thought about how that changes a bit the symbolism.
Oddly enough, I read a stamping blog where the woman is Dutch, I think, and she posts in both English and Dutch. She posted a Spring craft where she used a Dutch Spring definition stamp, and you could see the Lenten root of their word for Spring. Very cool.
Thank you for your words of love and support as we go through Lent. Know you are all in my humble prayers as well.
What a lovely reflection on Lent, Mimi. I appreciate the reference to Aslan on the move too. Beautiful imagery.
