One of the plusses for me though is that now I have two plus hours to sit in my car. So, of course, I have been doing what comes naturally to me – reading for a luxuriously long amount of time. The second thing I’ve taken to doing is, instead of walking the treadmill, walking around the track for 10 laps, which takes me about 40 minutes, and I think is about 2.5 miles.
On the book end – I’ve read Tess of the d’Urbervilles, The Kalahari Typing School for Men, Innocent Traitor, and Circle of Quilters. All good. All very good. I’m very excited to be picking up the fabulous Bev’s newest book Royal Monastic tonight.
On the walking side of things – I have been learning a bit about myself. One of my motivators for walking on the treadmill is that I can read while I do so. I have not yet quite figured out how to read while I walk on a track without falling off the track, so I’ve been just alone with my thoughts. I know that there is a goal to “pray without ceasing”, and I have tried to put that into practice. However, I am not very good at it, finding it much easier to contemplate things that I’ve been needing to think about, watch the footballers and cheerleaders practice, pay attention to the birds and wonder what kind they are, think more about those things I need to be thinking about, and oh yeah, pray for those who cross my mind and throw in a Jesus Prayer now and then.
The only down side is after two plus hours out of my night spent thusly, my time at home is just about nil and I feel like I’m really running behind on my “to do” list. And, I must admit, yesterday I declined to walk around the track in the rain and just read more.

I need to get the hang of walking on the treadmill while reading. I love the Precious Ramotswe novels - all of them and I'm looking forward to the TV series with trepidation hoping they haven't cast some skinny glam chick in the role!
I am happy - I googled Jill Scott who plays Precious and she doesn't look as if she'd crack a rib giving someone a hug - thank heavens!
Awesome! Whohooooooo! I'm glad to hear. I'm curious about the TV series as well.
The trick to reading on the treadmill (at leats for me) is to hold on to the book with one hand, and the railing with the other.
I never figured out how to walk a treadmill and read. I get so absorbed in the book, I forget to move my feet. Whoops! Over I go!
As for football, I understand your trepidation and am glad my son never went for team sports. He enjoyed marital arts better.
I'm going to need to check out this set of novels mentioned in the comments.
Walking the track is a good thing. When the weather is fine...I hear you about being away from home. Things do start to pile up.
You sound like me, the main reason I treadmill is so I can read! Though I am a big fan of downloading books on my MP3 player. You can do podcasts too. Though sometimes I like to walk and let my thoughts wander. I don't think I'll reach "inner stillness" until I"m done with kids. I have too much bottled up and when I try to be still, some of the "froth" has to bubble off.
(((hugs))) You are such a sweet mom!
Angels around the Xman as he plays football and you as you walk around that track!
How about audiobooks while you walk? Not the same as a book-book but...
Or podcasts from Ancient Faith radio? I think I'll go walk and listen to them right now!
You've been busy! I'm reading Cesar's Way by the dog whisperer Cesar...not quite as exciting, but it's helping me understand my dog better!
I'm reading about your walking about the track and I'm feeling guilty about not wanting to go to the gym this evening. NOw I think I will - Geeesh! I said I'd go every day, but I was so busy today I figured I could skip it. But, I think I'm going to, because you made a good point: I can read whilst doing it or pray the rosary I still need to pray today.
Sounds great! It's good to try to say the Jesus prayer while you're walking. I remember when I learned how to ski, I would say the Jesus prayer constantly as I accelerated down the hill. I was a bit scared and think it was appropriate.
Margie....yeah, glad to hear someone else is so excited, too. I guess the BBC aired the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency in March 2008, so I'm hoping our local PBS will start them pretty soon!
Walking on a treadmill and walking: I'm amazed by this.
I suppose you need a treadmill to try it out, huh?
I too enjoy the No 1. Ladies Detective Agency books...good, easy reading. And fun.
Happy reading, and all the best for Xman as he plays football.
on boys and football...sometimes the fantasy is better than the reality....it's awesome that you letting him the reigns! it's a tough sport and, oddly enough, not ALL physical. greg was a 6'4" pencil -neck of a kid in high school, determined to play football. he played...eventually, well enough to continue in college. somewhere in his senior year, his metabolism started to kick in...a few more pounds and a LOT more muscle mass. the rest is college history. now at 56, people still ask him if he was a 49-er!
sounds great! Reading and walking! My son played football for two years. He was fast too. Hope your son enjoys it.
I totally sympathize with the whole football thing. My oldest son was really into it for about 2 years. I let him do it but was not thrilled. Fortunately, he REALLY got into baseball way more then he ever did football and I'm grateful. Good luck!!!!
Audiobooks are good. Or prayers on CD. I can't read while running on the treadmill, but I love to listen to my roasary CD with Dana the Irish singer.
At the H.S. today my eldest (freshman) was watching the school promotion video and I asked which sport he'd like to try out for and he kept saying "soccer" even though he has a fantastic arm (baseball). Upon leaving, he asked, "Can I try out for track and field?" Huh-yeah!
The point I'm always trying to make to my kids: stay active and try new things. If you are trying a team effort thing, you have to finish the season because everyone is counting on everyone to be there!
Typing school is SOOOO GOOD! you'll love it.
What? A TV Series? I might have to buy a TV!!!
That quiet time for thinking is one of my favorite things about exercising. It is nice to just have time to pause in my head, to not have 100 different people vying for my attention.
That said, I sometimes listen to books on CD while I'm exercising. It's easier than exercising with a book in hand! Does your library have them?
Mahalo for the book recommendations. I bought Tess of the D'. a long time ago but never got around to reading it.
G'day from Australia. I came here from Mielikki's blog.
Walking gets my vote - and tennis, and cricket, and every other sport I played as a kid!
Ever since moving to the farm I've been walking a lot more - taking the dog out for a romp through the wheat fields almost every night. I know what you mean about thinking your own thoughts instead of having a book in front of you... I too strive to get closer to prayer without ceasing but usually find myself distracted by so many other things.
My youngest son (now 32) was an athlete from little league all the way up through high school so I had lots of practices and games to sit through. Also more than my share of trips to emergency rooms with various sprains and dislocations. We used to jokingly say it was a good thing every one of his injuries happened on a sports field with lots of witnesses because as often as he was hurt otherwise the medical staff at the hospital would have been calling children's services.
I'll say a prayer for X that the season will be a good one with no harm!
So how was the first game?
We were soaked through and through. The boys were soaked before the game started.
I was impressed with my son. He can hold his own. Like yours,he has swiftness of feet on his side.
oh Mama Mimi I sooo understand. Andrew played football and was 5'1 in his freshman year - but worked up to 2nd string. He did break his collarbone at one point (11th grade) - be prepared for the bruises and rug burns around the neck - and say lots of PRAYERS! It is a good sport for all boys to try...I never understood the game but knew my son by his red cleats on the field...:)
