Where have I been? New York, baby. We just got back from a lovely week in New York City. Neither of us had ever been, so it was a fabulous treat. We stayed with a lovely friend and her family near the airport on the first night, and then came into the City on Tuesday.
That night, we saw a Yankees game, they beat the Twins . We saw our erstwhile Richie Sexon play first base late in the game (although he dropped the ball, literally, when they announced him during warm-ups). Despite their reputation, we thoroughly enjoyed the fans around us and had great conversations, and upon request, bought the X-man a Jeter t-shirt.
Thursday, we got up late, got bagels and coffee and ate with Alice in Central Park, and then hoofed through the park looking for Strawberry Fields. After finally finding it (note to New York – better signage might be a help in the park), we headed down to the waterfront to take the tour of the Statue of Liberty. It was absolutely incredible in person – I would have never thought. We wanted to see Ellis Island (especially since I have the immigration information on my Basque great-grandfather) but it was after four by the time we got there, so we just took photos from the deck of the ferry – it is top of my list for the next time.
We traveled back to our friends’ house, where they took amazing care of us yet again (we are forever indebted) and had Ethiopian food for the first (but I assure you not last) time, and traveled home on Friday.
I was a bit worried about the weather prior to going (I’ve never spent much time in humidity) and had a long conversation with the fabulous Michele who even checked the forecast for us. While it was warm and humid (my hair was pretty much damp the entire time, and check out my glistening face in the pics), it was not unbearable, and we got quite a storm Wednesday night on the way home from Shea. The entire city glistened with puddles on Thursday, and it was much cooler that morning.

Wow! Sounds like you were there the very same time as we were. We got there on Monday evening and left on Friday evening. Got caught in that storm on Wednesday night coming back from Spamalot! It was drizzling a bit and Hibi said, snarkily, "why's everyone putting up umbrellas for *this*?" and then the next moment we knew why! Gosh, I thought I would drown. Just isn't the same kind of rain we get here!
I'll try to post more about what we did on my blog.
You got to go away - without kids??!!! Niiiccee. Sounds like a lovely time.
NYC is a very fun place to visit. But I was so glad to be home...
Noisy, smelly, dirty, loud and the most exciting place in the world! So glad you had a chance to visit...and what's that? Without the kids??? That's not a vacation...that's a honeymoon!!
Lucky! I love those photos....especially by Lady Liberty! What a great shot. So, I clicked on that link to Strawberry Fields....there are NO strawberries growing there? There should be. I think the Beatles are fantastic. While discussing what your fav movie is recently, I decided it was "Help!" by the Beatles, now I want to find a copy to show my girls...they'd like it.
Yeah! I am so glad that you enjoyed MY city :) You definitely need to go back and visit some of the non-touristy spots- they are so much better. Maybe one day we can meet up there!
I love that photo in front of Lady Liberty- great shot.
Mimi,
Wow! Did you know Alexa, Rob, and Rocky went too this past week? How nice for you all, but I have to say...I just couldn't get into that big city..cept for a game like you and that Statue of Liberty...that's about it...still, I know some folks just love it or even the idea of going. Glad you had a nice vacation.
lovely! someday i hope to go too! so glad you had a good day!
Sounds fabulous, Mimi !!!
Glad you had a great time :-)
I LOVED it when I was there - but I have to say I'm more of a SF girl. Possibly because it was my first intro to a big US city and I had a wonderful tour guide. Your Dad was very patient with us...
Be honest, now -- you've never tasted anything like a REAL New York bagel, have you? ;-) What fun it was to see my hometown through your eyes!
Sounds like such a great time!
Sounds like a wonderful trip!! (I'm OK. thanks so much fro praying:-) And I laughed so hard at the supporting my daughter's career comment. Great comic relief. God bless, good friend.
Watched the Yankees beat the Twins? The horror! The horror!
Sounds wonderful!
Wow, you did a lot in a week! Glad you got to see the Mets play. Nice to have you back. Didn't you just love the Cloisters!!
Great photos, and sounds like great adventures!
Don't you just LOVE NY?! We only live a few hours away and don't go nearly enough :)
Haha, I almost had THIS baby on the Dormition of the Holy Theotokos! I guess I should name her Maria instead of Sophia LOL!
Glad you had such a great time in NYC! I'm ashamed to say that, except for 2 layovers at JFK airport, I've never experienced it.
Sometimes you just need a vacation...
how amazing! i've always wanted to go to new york, you're so lucky!
A Basque great grandfather, cool! Have you been there?
The Cloisters are totally cool too.
Glad you had such a nice gettaway by yourselves.
Sounds like a very awesome trip! I'm going to have to figure out RSS feeds so I get instant updates on your adventures! ;-) Your cats are adorable, too.
We were, Presbytera Eliz, and with Alexa too, Suzanne. A good friend's daughter was there too - it was apparently the time to be there.
MM - I'd love to see it through your eyes, and Meg, I giggled at your "secret ingredient" of bagels - they are amazing.
KM - no, I've not been to the Basque Country, it is on my "to do" list.
Thank you everyone for your kind comments. I'd love to someday do New York with all of us.
