I’m quite cultured now, thank you! On Thursday, I had the pleasure of attending (with a good friend) the first of three Silent Movies . I’m not sure I ‘d ever actually seen one before (but I did of course see Silent Movie by Mel Brooks, that counts, right?) I was stunned to learn that only about 12% of the Silent Movies made remain, and of those, only about 1% of the scores exist. The man who played the amazing Theater Organ
did a great job of scoring a recently rediscovered and restored
Beyond the Rocks . Gloria Swanson (who had dark hair, who knew?), Rudolph Valentino, Flapper outfits. Sigh. It was lovely.

And, last night, Eddie and I went heard the Symphony’s Brush Up On Your Shakespeare . They did a great job of introducing each piece with a scene from a play. The music choices were amazing, and the symphony, as always, played well.

In the midst of all that , I stopped at the local Greek Festival and bought Tiropitas and Baklava for dinner last night. Yum.

Hey, we went to the Greek Festival yesterday, too! Saw Elizabeth's husband Paul, but he was thronged with parishioners so we didn't get a chance to say hi. We did have some delicious tyropitas and gyros, though... and loukoumades for dessert, mmmmmmm. A little of those sure goes a long way.

"Brush Up On Your Shakespeare" sounds like a lot of fun. What a cool idea!

As for silent movies, why not watch "The Thief of Baghdad" or the original 1925 "Ben Hur" with Roman Navarro? They are both amazing pieces of cinematography.

What a fun weekend! We went to a Heritage Festival this weekend at an Antiochian Orthodox church. The food was amazing. We still have a few desserts left.

Cultured indeed! Folks from Church tried to drag us to the Greek Festival in Portland, but it's two hours away, too many people, excuses, excuses.... maybe next year.

Hey Mimi, you probably didn't see my question over on my blog but I was wondering what led to your interest in Tudor history.

There's a great little silent movie theater in Los Angeles on Fairfax. I've been twice and thouroughly enjoyed each time. Great fun!

Hey Molly - I'm glad you got to go - I think it must be difficult to be the priest at the festival, I'm sure everyone wants to throng you.

Vara - I'm off to put that into my Netflix queue.

Michelle - I've never been to an Arab Fest, yum!

Liz- yes, I know. If I were to be in a Greek parish, I'd be a large woman indeed. So many fattening foods.

Lauren - an entire theater? What fun!
