Sometimes, a thought keeps coming up. I generally figure when that happens, I need to pay attention. In a recent confession, my priest mentioned that the reaction when someone does something that bothers you is to thank God. Wow, I thought. But, I could see the wisdom in it.
Pondering that, I had the opportunity to see Metropolitan Hierotheos speak yesterday. He also hit upon the very same thought, that whatever comes our way, we need to thank God for all things. It’s very easy as Christians to thank God during the good times, but it is definitely not as easy to thank God for the trials and tribulations. And, as Christians, we are specifically called to take up those trials and tribulations by taking up our cross.
This reminded me that a dear woman I’ve known online for years, Meg always begins her emails with the delightful “Glory to God for all things.” She gets it. Now I need to too.
I also must add that it was an amazing pan-Orthodox talk, and I got to see many good friends, sit next to my Goddaughter (who cracked me up after the opening prayer by leaning over and saying, “that was Greek to me”), to see friends from across the mountains, meet a woman who would have been a parish member with me had we moved to Kennewick, and to see the delightful Arielle.

i think that's something that everyone struggles with!!
be blessed, my friend!!
Did the Metropolitan speak in Greek or English?! It never occurred to me that he (a) would address an English-speaking audience in Greek, or (b) that he even *could* speak English. I do wish he were coming East!
As for me "getting it" -- thanks for the compliment, but I start my e-mails that way to *remind* me that I *need* to get it! ;-) (And these days, I actually end my e-mails that way -- it's a g-mail thing.)
I was very conscience of how I am NOT "thankful in all things." this past weekend when our plumbing died. Those types of things put me in my place.
It sounds like a wonderful lecture.
Isn't it funny how people get all concerned if something goes "wrong" in your life? Like the natural state of being is that (our version of) a perfect life is our birthright. That doesn't mean we shouldn't bear one another's burdens, just give glory to God in all things. Of course, I'm the best example of what NOT to do...
And speaking of sin, I am so jealous, jealous, jealous of you being able to go hear the Metropolitan!
Thank you for sharing.
I've been reminded of this a few times recently as well, and it seems I forget as often as I'm reminded. So, thanks for yet another reminder....
Me too... jealous!!!! Wow.

Annie's comment:
Thankfulness is always something I've struggled with. Even the smallest inconvenience can make me feel unfairly dealt a lot in life. It is hard to be thankful INSPITE of difficulties, let alone BECAUSE of them. Lord have mercy, indeed
(I removed information she sent me that I don't want in cyberspace)
Thank you for your comments to let me know I'm not the only one that struggles with this so mightily.
And, to answer Meg, yes, he spoke in Greek. There was a friend of his who sat next to him and translated.
Thanks, Mimi!
LOL -- your Goddaughter's comment after the opening prayer totally cracked me up!
