Those who are too smart to engage in politics are punished by being governed by those who are dumber. ~Plato

For those of us in the United States, today is Election Day

As some of you may remember, I am forced to vote-by-mail, much to my annoyance and frustration (there’s not even a sticker in the envelope) so my vote has been cast for awhile now. But, for those who actually get to *go* vote, please do – and while I don’t get into politics much (although I’m pretty sure you can guess pretty well my leanings) I do think that no matter who you vote for, voting is absolutely important. I look forward to playing Political Pundit tonight and watching the returns.

On another note, this week’s selection of words on my word-a-day email are words formed by combining two words (which the Word A Day email mentioned is called portmanteau (from French, carrying case for clothes, usually with two compartments) since Lewis Carroll gave them this moniker in his 1872 classic "Through the
Looking-Glass".)
Yesterdays?

bodacious (boh-DAY-shuhs) adjective

1. Outright, thorough.

2. Remarkable, impressive.

3. Gutsy, brazen.

4. Voluptuous.

[A blend of bold and audacious.]

I had no idea it was a blended word.

Lastly, please keep those in my water soaked neck of the woods in your thoughts and prayers. I have friends and parish members who have been flooded and evacuated, and we are still getting rain.

Stay Dry and vote

I didn't know that Washington was the same as Oregon in it's vote-by-mail system. I am also frustrated by not getting a sticker! And visibly voting and joining with others who are voting is satisfying. But I do have to say that being able to lounge on the couch and fill out my ballot while going over the issues has it's appeal, over having to bring a cheat sheet with me that I've already filled out and then transfer the answers.

But darn it, I want a sticker! I voted!

I had to laugh at my dear husband, at the last election, when we were talking with a local politician. Paul hadn't registered to vote yet, and so was going to miss voting. We were both standing there with this guy who was running for city commissioner, and he said to him, "You have our vote!" I thought, ha, yeah, between us we only have one vote! You speak rightly! Anyway, he didn't even have to go past the primaries, he won outright, so all was good. :-)

Not all of Washington is vote by mail--fortunately!! I am really really against this voting by mail trend (I think I'm going to write a post about it on livejournal). I need to start a campaign before it's too late... I voted yesterday. I didn't get a sticker (not sure why?), but I also voted at about 7 pm and there wouldn't have been much point. Sigh.

For the record... I do not like the vote by mail. Especially here in WA where in our last Gov race it had three recounts, and it seemed that during at least one of the recounts they found ballots that they had not counted previously.

You and my wife are better than me getting your ballot out early... I did not get my ballot out until Tuesday.

I would hate to vote by mail...what a buzz-kill! Democracy has few enough pleasures, it seems a shame to take one away, LOL.

I had no idea bodacious was a blended word, either. I think I'll use it somewhere today!

I'm Canadian, so my election days are different, but I must admit, the last election I voted it, I got in a line that was so long, I decided to just skip it.
isn't that awful?
