It’s the Summer of the Road Trip (it’s also the Summer of Cantaloupe, but that’s a different story). We found ourselves this past weekend driving yet again (which doesn’t bother me so much, but Xavier hit the limit of road tripping) to Lake Siskiyou to camp with Eddie’s extended family. It was a lovely time full of lots of family time, lake swimming for those who chose to (I didn't) and good food.

The boys headed down to spend some time with the California relations, and Eddie and I drove to Ashland where we stayed in a lovely European Style hotel right downtown within easy walking distance of the shops, restaurants, and the Shakespeare Festival.
We took in Romeo and Juliet which I’d never seen live before. They did a neat version where they highlighted the generation gap by clothing the parents in traditional Elizabethan garb, and the younger ones in modern clothing. The music was traditional with a techno beat (it worked, trust me). Perhaps it is my Post-Potter Syndrome speaking, but I was really struck this viewing of the play by the fact that Romeo had committed murder, and the damage that does to one’s soul.

at St. Gabriel’s Mission (it started at 8am, thank you Father Isaac!), concelebrated by a ROCOR priest, Father Seraphim,
who talked about his visit to Moscow for the reunification, and of the two parishes getting together for an afternoon – what a blessing for the Southern Oregon Orthodox. I’ve never been to the Rogue River church, but you can see it from the freeway, so I always crane my neck and stare as we pass it!
A good time had by all, and I made it home in time for Book Club

Oh, we stayed in that hotel as well! Cool place.
I am really wanting to make it to Ashland sometime during this season, but we haven't yet...I want to see both Romeo and Juliet and Taming of the Shrew.
And I've met Fr. Isaac before, last year at camp! Hopefully he'll be back this year--camp is next week at Camp Angelos. 8 am? You must have really wanted to go to get up that early on vacation!
sounds like a wonderful time! we are so blessed to be given such times, eh? :)
Oh it sounds so lovely. I don't normally like it when they "modernize" Shakesphere (Kenneth Branaugh's Hamlet being an exception) so I will have to trust you on that one.
I'd have liked to see that version of Romeo & Juliet. I'm not one for modernizing either but I think this could work well.
Looks like a lovely hotel, and a very interesting take on Romeo & Juliet.
Great to hear you had a good time.
Love a good road trip, sounds great.
As for motoring about, Nicky and I are the acknowledged experts. Of course, our location is key to all of that. Here in Albany we are at the centre of the road network in the Northeastern US. If you go north, you can reach Montréal in four hours, Boston is some three hours to the east, and New York is about the same to the south. Pennsylvania is rather farther away, so we rarely go there. Of course, there is much of interest in-between! (Jordanville is 90 minutes away. God is GOOD!)
This means that we can strike out in any given direction on any weekend and have a different experience. New England one time, the Adirondacks the next, or crawling through Manhattan at yet another.
My Nicky truly comes alive behind the wheel (is this true of all men? One wonders...), and he loves exploring "the road less travelled" (again, is this common to all men, or is it just Nicky?). God willing, Mimi, you have just as good a man in your life.
Also, Mimi, Nicky and I are particularly close during such a motor. Is this true with you and your husband as well? (I do NOT mean the fact that one sits closely in an auto, I'm talking about bonds).
Cheers to all, and let the fresh sunshine of the Church warm your life.

The Icon/fresco on the back of St. Innocent's that is visible from the freeway is cool -- it prompted me to get off of the road just to visit the site.
You know Harry Potter is important literature when it can inform your understanding of Shakespeare! Too cool!
Sounds like a fantastic time!
Thanks for sharing your trip with us Mimi. Nice to have you back.
Sounds like a fun weekend trip. We've kind of put that stuff on hold until we get the baby settled in. :)
We keep meaning to go down to Ashland for a few days. Jim was there a few weeks ago to pick up the boys, but we've never spent any time there--thanks for the recommend.
drool drool drool. i lived 21 miles up hwy 66 (lincoln) for a semester and spent weekend nights in town. ashland is one of my favorite places on earth and i imagine i'll retire there. i hope to vacation down there regularly soon. i'm glad you had such a great time. what restaurants did you go to? did you shop at rare earth?
that sounds like so much fun!! we have "shakespeare in the park" here, and i've been to that before. pretty cool. i like R+J, but MacBeth is by far my favorite!
Here are my quiz answers!!!
1) In the last Star Wars movie, were the babies born naturally or by C-section? I was confused The twins were born naturally.
2) Now that we are past the halfway mark of the baseball season, what are your predictions for the Post-Season? And, what players have surprised you (either good or bad) Well, as always I predict the Braves will win everything. I'm superstitious enough to think that predicting anything else will jinx them. I'm not necessarily surprised by anyone's play, but I gotta say that I'm extrememly happy that Brandon Phillips is playing so well. I ate dinner with him at a player event several years ago and I'm very excited for him. Glad to see Rick Ankiel doing so well in his new role, too. Having seen him playi in the minors, I'm not at all surprised at Chase Utley's success, and I hope he bounces back quickly!
3) What's one of the funniest questions you've gotten as a teller? Hmmm... I had someone ask me once, "Do I have to pay for a savings bond?"
And, my two stock questions -
4) Who is your favorite Beatle, and why? Umm... Beetle Bailey? LOL! Not a huge Beatles fan, but I would say either George Harrison or Paul Mc. I've read things about GH that really impressed me, and I really like PM's animal-rights stand. Don't know a lot about Ringo, and don't like John Lennon at all.
5) What is the best song by a band/artist you usually dislike? (and, yes, I have a lot of fun coming up with entrants for that list) Hmm... probably Good Riddance/Time of Your Life by Green Day... totally not a fan, but I love the song!
Ooooh, Elizabeth - did you stay in one of the suites? I think if we stay there again, we'll want to do that.
Father Isaac is really neat, I agree. Enjoy seeing him!
Papa Herman - I am jealous, I'd love to have seen the church close up!
And, KKT, thanks for answering!
