Do you know the feeling when you start reading a new book before the membrane of the last one has had time to close behind you? You leave the previous book with ideas and themes - characters even - caught in the fibers of your clothes and when you open the new book they are still with you.
From The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield my book club book last month, and very much recommended.
After contemplating that quote for awhile (and I will continue to do so), I realized that I do have a way to close the membrane - I write the title, author, and date finished in my book journal. Does anyone else have a "finished book" ritual?

I don't have a ritual, but I do know that feeling.
I think your's is a great idea for some closure. Especially for those good books that stay with us long after we're done.
Hmm...god idea. I think I'll start a log.
Finish a book? I can hardly remember the last time I got through one. I love to read, but with two active little ones it's hard to get through a whole book these days. Someday....
(And no, that picture wasn't taken in our backyard, but at my inlaws'.)
I just finished a Robert Ludlum spy-thriller last night and tried to start a Chiam Potok novel today. It jst didn't work. I took Chiam back to the library. I felt like I was trying to take a bunch of renegade spys into a Bar Mitzah party.
I rarely read fiction so this isn't really a problem. I think, though, that renegades at a Bar Mitzah would make for an interesting book. LOL.
I don't have a finished book journal, but my cousin has participated in the 50 book challenge for a few years. I think I'm going to do the same this year as well. You can read more about it at http://50books.blogspot.com/
I'm reading Mountain of Silence right now and it is absolutely wonderful!

I have two rituals depending on whether the book is mine or not. If it isn't mine I give it back straightaway before it blends in on my shelf. If it is mine I keep it out a week and dip back into my favourite bits or, if it's that kind of novel, like a historical one, I read the notes and intro which I never do at the beginning.
I just started a book journal this year--my first ever. It's not helping with the "book membrane" problem, though. Maybe I'm leaping from one into another too quickly...?
Thanks for the recommendation--I am constantly looking for more reading fodder!
nah books lives with me :) maybe I should keep a log ...I love reading and consume books !!
My teenagers keep a log of their reading. My girls enjoy counting how many thousand pages they read each year. For awhile I used to write book titles in my journal as I read them. These days, though, I've been blogging instead of journaling.
BTW, thanks for being such a faithful commenter over at my place!!
Mary
