During Lent, we prepare for Pascha by reading the Old Testament. This comes from the early church tradition of bringing people into the church on Holy Saturday (a practice observed often in our church today). Last Friday, therefore, we finished up our readings of Genesis (“And Jacob drew his feet up onto his bed…and Joseph died at the age of one hundred and ten years...” Genesis 49 and 50) The other book we’ve been reading during Lent is Proverbs. At the end of Proverbs we hear the description of a wise wife that includes this passage:
21She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
Now, I’ve always suspected it was a translation issue, and that was confirmed when I read the new OSB. However, I’ve always liked this translation and smile when I hear it. It was particularly appropriate as this is what I woke up to on Saturday morning.
Xavier’s game was snowed out (on April 19th! Can you believe it?) and we had our Palm Sunday Procession while it was snowing (but not sticking) on Sunday after Liturgy. Papa Herman on the other side of the mountains mentioned snow during their Palm Sunday fish dinner as well. These first two days of Holy Week remind us of the Fig Tree and the Wise and Foolish Virgins. May these parables prepare me as the readings of Genesis and Proverbs do for the Great Pascha of our Lord coming so swiftly
Behold, the Bridegroom cometh in the middle of the night, and blessed is that servant whom He shall find watching; and again unworthy is he whom He shall find heedless. Beware, therefore, O my soul, lest thou be overcome with sleep, lest thou be given up to death, and be shut out from the Kingdom. But rouse thyself and cry: Holy, Holy, Holy art Thou, O God, through the Mother of God, have mercy on us.

i heard there was snow out west! it is very warm here... but showers scheduled for Sat! i hope this is not so, but may all things be according to His Will! :)
we had feet upon feet of snow here in Ottawa, so i am really glad for warm weather! though it gets so warm here so fast that i dread the summer - it is 25 degrees which in F is 77 degrees. i call this skipping spring and going on to summer a little to early!
Blessed Holy Week! i too pray that the services will change me... Lord have mercy on us all in the Holiest of Weeks!
We had pouring rain and processed indoors. I'm always surprised at how lovely the church looks all decked out in fine greenery. Such a nice surprise after weeks of Lenten purple.
Thanks for the nice recap of our Scripture readings.
It was rather hot and humid at our procession! How funny to hear about all the different weather experiences.
Blessed Holy Week!
Snow. Wow. I would love some snow.
A blessed Holy Week to you and your family.
I am amazed at the thought of your Palm Sunday snow ! Yesterday we were walking around with short sleeves :-)
Palm processions in the snow! We had a bit of snow about two weeks ago...it almost made the whole of England grind to a halt..we're so unused to it that we can't as a country cope with the white fluffy stuff!
We at St. Paul also had a processional snowfall. It started coming down during the second antiphon, and made our choir books all bubbly where it melted. B was serving, and managed to keep a straight face. Members of the choir (especially me) were not quite so successful. Great fun, especially on this bit of brightness preceding Holy Week. :-)
Have a blessed Holy Week, and a glorious and joyous Pascha!
Thank you so much Mimi! I needed to be reminded of those parables this week.
How does the OSB translate it? I only have the New Testament. Love your snow :-)
Maggie
Thank you, everyone for your kind words. It has been a lovely Holy Week, and suprisingly, after last week's bluster, we may even be in the 70s on Pascha! My prayers that it be so.
Maggie - I double checked, nary a mention of snow - "She makes a double upper garment for her husband and garments of fine linen and purple for herself"
Christ is risen!I wish you a blessed Easter!(biiiig hug :) )
Christos voskrese!
I think I will go with poetry over precision and prefer the KJV translation :-) I still need to send for the complete OSB - give my money to some other book vendor than Amazon for a change!
